UTPA will honor UTPA Hall of Famer, Olympic gold medalist, and former NBA player Luke Jackson by raising his retired basketball jersey to the Field House rafters Feb. 16 during the men’s basketball game.
Jackson played three seasons for the Broncs and led them to the 1962-63 NAIA National Championship his junior year and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award.
Soon after graduating, the San Marcos native played for Team USA in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and helped bring home a gold medal.
The 6-foot-9 forward/center was the fourth overall pick of the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1964 draft. Jackson played eight seasons in the NBA, a total of 522 games and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team and the NBA All-Star Team during the 1964-65 season.
Saturday night’s halftime festivities are a continuation of Homecoming week and will follow the induction of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013 during a luncheon at 11 a.m. Jackson is an inductee from the UTPA Hall of Fame class in 2007 and will be present at the halftime ceremony.
