Campus web outage caused by iOS 7 updates
The Division of Information Technology sent an email at approximately 2 p.m. to let students and faculty know that an unplanned outage caused Internet connectivity issues campus-wide. According to the IT Facebook page, this caused “slow loading of all off-campus websites. Visitors trying to reach UTPA websites could experience slow loading times as well.”
A follow-up email from IT sent at approximately 5 p.m. stated that the network saturation on The University of Texas System State of Texas network caused the Internet connectivity and access issues on the UTPA campus.
“This is due to the nature of the bandwidth saturation across the Internet which is attributed to the number of devices/people attempting to reach the Apple iTunes site to upgrade to the latest release of the iOS operating system that was released earlier today,” the follow-up email stated. “We do expect to continue to experience some issues the rest of the day today and possibly throughout the rest of the week.”
According to the Business Insider, the same problem occurred at other colleges, such as New York University and Ohio University.
