Men’s basketball beat the big dogs in tough game

For the first time in three years, the UTPA men’s basketball team beat the two-time defending Great West Conference Champion Utah Valley University 62-60 Saturday.

The last time the Broncs defeated the Wolverines was during the March 12, 2010 GWC Tournament Quarterfinals in Utah.

This is the latest in a season the Broncs have been .500 since the 2007-08 season, when they went 18-13.

With 14 lead changes and three ties, the game was tight throughout. The biggest lead the Broncs held on to was by seven at the start of the second half, while the Wolverines never led by more than three.

Leading three Broncs in double- Ruben Cabrera scored a season-high and game-high 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 1-of-2 behind the arc, plus 8-of-13 from the line, with five rebounds. Both senior guard Aaron Urbanus and junior forward Justin Leathers scored 11 points with six assists.

The Broncs (10-10, 2-0 GWC) bounce back into action Saturday at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
