The University of Texas-Pan American men’s basketball team beat the Cal State University Bakersfield Roadrunners 79-73 in overtime at the UTPA Field House, putting an end to their two-game skid, moving to 13-13 and getting back to .500.
Justin Leathers, who was one of four Broncs to score in double figures, led the Broncs, scoring 16 points as Ruben Cabrera led the Broncs in rebounding with five boards. Thursday’s match-up was a preview of one the Broncs opponents as they make the move from the Great West to the Western Athletic Conference next year.
This was the Broncs’ fourth overtime game this year, where they are 2-2 (one of those a triple overtime game against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne) as they were able to come out with the win after falling to the University of New Orleans just nine days before in overtime.
The Broncs look to stay above .500 as they host Houston Baptist University Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Field House, where the Broncs will pay tribute to former Broncs men’s basketball head coach Sam Williams. The Broncs will also acknowledge the 2013 UTPA Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Honor Class, as well as welcome the 1963 NAIA Championship team for their 50th anniversary of their national championship run.
