Since it began almost two decades ago, CineSol has become a leading cultural venue in South Texas for local and international talent delivered through a relatively recent art medium: film.
And for the third consecutive year, it’s lending its prestige to another art form: graphic design, giving interested students, citizens or established designers the opportunity to publicize their work by competing in a poster contest for the 17th Annual CineSol Film Festival.
“We support the arts, so having graphic design will give more exposure to us and continue giving students and artist the opportunity to display their talent,” said Henry Serrato, festival director for CineSol.
What is great about this opportunity, The University of Texas-Pan American alumnus said, is not only the unlimited number of submissions allowed per person nor the chance to win $250. It’s the fact that the winner will have his/her work form the face for this year’s festival.
The design will be transmitted to a variety of print material, including 30” by 36” posters, print ads and shirts, to advertise the event as well as the winning artist
Color, design concepts and a strong presentation is encouraged. Deadline for submissions is May 28 at 5 p.m. The winning poster will be announced in mid-June.

SECOND 24-HOUR FILM DASH
CineSol will also host its 2nd Annual 24-Hour Film Dash on Saturday, May 1.
Created to stimulate competitors’ fast-paced abilities while under intense deadline pressure, the event is one for filmmakers (amateur and professional) and all others interested in attending.
It measures a crew’s aptitude, cleverness, imagination, originality and composure as it produce a three-to-five-minute movie. According to the CineSol’s filmmaking rules, each team will be assigned required elements that must appear in their films, such as a specific character, prop, line of dialogue and/or location.
The writing, shooting and editing must be completed by Sunday, May 2. Although many have yet to sign up during the pre-registration period, Serrato said there are high hopes for a good turnout.
“We always seem to get entries right before the deadline,” he said. “And many tend to sign up the day of… so we’ll be seeing more then.”
Registration and check-in will take place at the venue’s downtown location. A kick-off meeting will follow from 11 a.m. until all business is squared away. The ‘Mad Dash,’ or commencement of the competition, is set for late afternoon.
Awards will be presented on Sunday, May 16 at Cine El Rey. Doors open at 5 p.m. Participants enter free with PASS ID. General admission is $5.00 per person. For additional information visit www.cinesol.com.
